Knowe of Yarso

Knowe of Yarso, located in Frotoft, Rousay, is a chambered cairn from around 2900BC.

It contains a 4-metre-long narrow passage, through which you gain access to the inner chamber.

Excavation of Yarso, in 1934, found the bodies of at least 29 adults, as well as many flint and bone tools (such as flint knives and scrapers), and the remains of 36 red deer - Orkney has no deer today, but this is evidence that they did exist on Rousay many, many years ago.

To reach this cairn, visitors must first complete an enjoyable half-mile, uphill walk, with great views. Walking boots are recommended.

The site is maintained by Historic Scotland.
